벤자민 프랭클린의 13가지 덕목 (Benjamin franklin 13 virtues)

벤자민 프랭클린이라고 하면 어떤 이미지가 먼저 생각나시는지...

모두가 그렇듯 미국달러 100$을 연상하게 될 것입니다. 그런데 시간관리의 도움을 주는 프랭클린 플래너도 벤자민 프랭클린에 의해 생겨난 것이라는 것 알고 계신가요? 그는 정치가이자 발명가로 피뢰침을 발명한 것으로도 알려졌는데, 이상하게 프랭크린 플래너는 그의 이름이 들어가 있는데도 쉽게 연상이 되지 않더군요 ^^

우연한 기회에 그가 항상 쓰던 플래너에는 13가지 덕목(Virtues)을 정리해두고 매주 한가지 덕목을 집중적으로 실천하려 했다는 이야기를 들었습니다. 그갓 실천하려 했던 13가지는 무엇인지 궁금해서 찾아봤습니다... 지금의 저에게 많은 도움이 될 것 같네요.

1. 절제 : 배부르도록 먹지 마라. 취하도록 마시지 마라.

Temperance : Eat not to dullness; drink not to elevation.

 

2. 침묵 : 자타에 이익을 주는 말만을 하고, 하찮은 대화는 피하라.

Silence : Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself; avoid trifling conversation.

3. 질서 : 모든 물건은 제자리에 두라. 일은 모두 때를 정해서 하라.

Order : Let all your things have their places; let each part of your business have its time.

4. 결단 : 해야 할 일은 결심하며, 게을리하지 말고 실행하라.

Resolution : Resolve to perform what you ought; perform without fail what you resolve.

5. 절약 : 자타에 이익을 주는 일에 돈을 사용하되, 낭비하지 마라.

Frugality : Make no expense but to do good to others or yourself; that is, waste nothing.

6. 근면 : 시간을 낭비하지 마라. 유익한 일에 종사하고 무용한 행위는 끊어버려라.

Industry : Lose no time; be always employed in something useful; cut off all unnecessary actions.

7. 진실 : 사람을 속여 헤치지 마라. 모든 언행은 공정하게 하라.

Sincerity : Use no hurtful deceit; think innocently and justly; speak accordingly.

8. 정의 : 남에게 해를 주지 않으며 해로운 일을 해서도 안 된다.

Justice : Wrong none by doing injuries; or omitting the benefits that are your duty.

9. 중용 : 극단을 피하라. 내게 죄가 있다고 생각하거든 남의 비난과 불법을 참으라.

Moderation : Avoid extremes; forebear resenting injuries so much as you think deserve.

10. 청결 : 신체. 의복, 주택에 불결한 흔적을 남기지 마라.

Cleanliness : Tolerate no uncleanliness in body, clothes, or habitation.

11. 침착 : 사소한 일, 보통 있는 일, 피할 수 없는 일에 침착함을 잃지 마라.

Tranquility : Be not disturbed at trifles or at accidents common or unavoidable.

12. 순결 : 건강과 자손을 위해서만 성교를 하라. 아둔해지거나 허약해지거나 자타의 평화나 평판을 해지치 말라.

Chastity : Rarely use venery but for health or offspring, never to dullness, weakness, or the injury of your own or another's peace or reputation.

13. 겸손 : 예수와 소크라테스를 본받으라.

Humility : Imitate Jesus and Socrates.

어디선가 이야기를 하길, 겸손이 가장 힘들었다고 하는군요 ^^
